Today's Bible Reading...

May 9 - II Kings 21-23

Questions:

1. How old was Manasseh when he began to reign? (21:1)
2. God would wipe out Jerusalem as one wipes a _____. (21:13)
3. Who did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, not turning aside to the right or to the left? (22:2)
4. What did Hilkiah the high priest find in the temple? (22:8)
5. What did the king do when he heard the words of the Book of the Law? (22:11)
6. Who was Huldah? (22:14)
7. What was the message God sent to Josiah? (22:20)
8. What did the king read to the people? (23:2)
9. How did Josiah die? (23:29)
10.Where was Jehoahaz taken? (23:34)

Manasseh adopted many of the wicked practices of the people around him. He got involved in the occult (witchcraft, sorcery, divination, mediums, spiritists, astrology). He sacrificed his own son. He rebuilt the high places and erected altars to Baal. He shed so much innocent blood that it filled Jerusalem from end to end. He did much evil and provoked God to anger. His son Amon also did evil.

Josiah did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. Hilkiah found the Book of the Law in the temple. When Josiah heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his robes. He began a reform. All the people pledged themselves to the covenant. Josiah tore down everything that was not of God. The Passover was celebrated in Jerusalem. Everything detestable to the Lord was destroyed. Josiah served the Lord "with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, in accordance with all the Law of Moses."Still, God's anger burned against Judah because of all that Manasseh had done. Josiah was killed in battle. Jehoahaz was carried to Egypt.

What can we learn from these verses?

1. Manasseh adopted occult practices and angered God. Stay away from the movies, television shows, books, games etc. that have to do with fortune-telling, seances, seeking power for a source other than God.
2. When God's Word was found, changes needed to be made. When we read our Bibles what changes do we find need to be made?
3. When Josiah's workers began to repair the temple they found the Book of the Law. When we seek to please God, God reveals God's self to us in the Word.
4. Josiah learned from the Word what God expected. We can know God's will by studying our Bibles.

Prayer: God, help me to quickly make the changes I need to make to be the person I need to be to serve you. Help me to serve you "with all my heart and with all my soul and with all my strength." In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.
