Today's Bible Reading...

May 31 - II Chronicles 34-36

Questions:

1. How old was Josiah when he became king? (34:1)
2. What did Hilkiah the priest find in the temple? (34:15)
3. What gender was Huldah? (34:22)
4. Which king did Josiah march out to meet in battle? (35:20)
5. To what country was Jehoahaz carried? (36:4)
6. Which king did Nebuchadnezzar bind with bronze shackles? (36:6)
7. Which king after Jehoiakim did Nebuchadnezzar bring to Babylon? (36:10)
8. Who was the prophet at the time of Zedekiah? (36:12)
9. To whom did God hand over the people of Jerusalem and what happened to them?(36:17,18)
10. Which king of Persia did the Lord appoint to build a temple in Jerusalem? (36:23)

These stories are also recorded in II Kings 23-25. Josiah became king when he was eight years old. As a young man he sought God. He began religious reforms. In the process the "Book of the Law" was found. Josiah's reforms delayed, but could not avert the fall of Judah. Jehoahaz was deposed and taken to Egypt. Jehoiakim was bound by chains and was suppose to go to Babylon. He died when he left the city. (Jeremiah 22:18,19 - "He will have the burial of a donkey") Jehoiachin was taken to Babylong. Zedekiah was placed on the throne by Nebuchadnezzar. Finally Nebuchadnezzar came and destroyed Jerusalem. He took Zedekiah, put out his eyes and carried him in chains to Babylon, where he died in prison.

What can we learn from these verses?

1. Josiah was only 16 when he began to seek the Lord and 4 years later began to purge Judah and Jerusalem. Don't disqualify anyone because of age. God uses the very young and the very old.
2. When the "Book of the Law" was found Josiah realized that changes needed to be made. When we read God's Word we realize the changes that we need to make in our lives. We will never know how God wants us to live unless we read the Word. Then we need to do more than read it, we need to live it.
3. Sometimes we are corrected, but not abandoned. The purpose of the exile was to redirect them and purge the nation. Never again did they serve false gods.

Prayer: God, thank you for directing my life and for bringing me back when I start to stray. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.
