Today's Bible Reading...
Deuteronomy 8-10
The wonders of the wilderness are recalled. For 40 years "their raiment waxed
not old, and their feet swelled not"; that they might learn obedience and trust
in God. The people are reminded that God's wondrous dealings with them was not
for their own righteousness. They had been a rebellious and stiff necked people
the whole way.
1. 8:3 Jesus quoted this verse when the devil tempted him to turn stones to
bread (Matthew 4:4). Life is not based simply on physical needs. We have deeper
spiritual needs that leave us empty and dissatisfied. There is a void within our
hearts that only God can fill.
2. 8:4 The people failed to notice and give thanks to God for daily blessings.
How often do you thank God for the car that doesn't break down, the refrigerator
that has lasted so many years. As God cared for the people in the wilderness, he
cares for us on our journey.
3. 9:2-3 The Anakites were enormous people. Some were seven to nine feet tall.
Goliath, was thought to be a descendant of this race. (I Samuel 17:4-7) The
Israelite spies were frightened of them (Numbers 13:28). Moses promised them
that God would handle the bullies.
4. Be careful whom you hear. People claimed the Anakites could not be defeated.
The Israelites had to decide to whom they would listen and believe.
5. The people were afraid to enter Canaan because they looked at their own
resources. We feel helpless and lost when we look everywhere but to God for our
help.
6. There are times when God calls us to do something that we ourselves cannot
do. The Israelites were able to destroy much larger nations because they
depended on God.
7. We are in partnership with God. God subdued the Anakites and drove them out
of the land. God did not do this because of the righteousness of Israel but
because of the wickedness of the enemy.
8. The tablets of the law were still in the ark about 500 years later when they
were placed in Solomon's temple. The last time we hear of the ark is 300 years
later during the reign of Josiah. (2 Chronicles 35:3)
9. What does God expect of God's people? 10:12,13
1. Fear God (have reverence for God)
2. Walk in God's ways
3. Love God
4. Serve God with your whole heart and soul
5. Obedience - obey commands
10. God used Israel in spite of their faults. God wants to use us as well.
God, please use me, not because I am worthy and good, but because you are
merciful and good.
In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.
