Today's Bible Reading...
March 18 - Joshua 14-16
Chapter 14 - Division of the land and Hebron is given to Caleb
The land was divided exactly as God had instructed Moses years earlier.
Caleb was one of the original spies sent into the Promised Land.
(Number 13)
Because of his faith and good report God promised him a personal inheritance
in
the land. 45 years later Caleb is now collecting his reward. Although his
land
still had giants on it, Caleb knew God would help him conquer them.
Chapter 15 - Judah's land
Judah receives inheritance, clan by clan
15:16 Caleb gives his daughter in marriage to the man who attacks and
captures
Kiriath Sepher. Othniel was the victor. Othniel became Israel's
first
judge after Joshua's death (Judges 1:13; 3:9-11)
Chapter 16 - Ephraim and Manasseh receive land
Joseph, the oldest son of Jacob's wife, Rachel, does not have a tribe
named after him,
but as the eldest son he received a double portion of the inheritance. This
was given to
his 2 sons Ephraim and Manasseh.
16:10 They did not dislodge the Canaanites living in Gezer. (This would
mean trouble later.)
1. God wants leaders like Joshua who will be diligent in following God's
instructions.
2. Caleb didn't believe in retirement. He won a battle years after his
80th birthday.
3. Caleb's faith never wavered.
4. What are the giants in your life? Like Caleb, trust God to fight them.
5. God's always grants his promises. Over 40 years had passed but God
remembered Caleb.
God, help me to be like Caleb. May I be faithful in my old age. Give me
courage
throughout my life. May I always be young at heart. In the name of Jesus I
pray. Amen.
