Today's Bible Reading...

March 16 - Joshua 9-10

Chapter 9 - The Israelites attack the southern kings.

As the Israelites continued in their military efforts, most of the kings in the area formed alliances to protect themselves. The people of Gibeon, however, were more creative. They resorted to a ruse. They were very successful in their deception. Their lives were spared and they became woodcutters and water carriers for the community. Joshua knew enough to go to God when it came to war, but the peace treaty seemed innocent. They made this decision on their own. Now they had to deal with the consequences of their angry people and a strange alliance.

What can we learn from this?

1. Take all things to God in prayer. Everything is important to God. By failing to seek God's guidance they had made a mistake they would regret. There are no small decisions. Take everything to God in prayer.

2. Always watch and pray - you can be deceived so easily by the enemy.

3. When you don't "inquire of the Lord" things go wrong.

4. We have to keep our promises even when we don't want to.

5. God helps us when we find ourselves struggling in situations. The Gibeonites became servants to Israel.

Chapter 10 - The day the sun stood still.

When the 5 kings of the Amorites found out that Gibeon had made a treaty with Israel they prepared to attack the Gibeonites. The Israelites came to their rescue. The Lord hurled large hailstones down from the sky. More were killed by the hailstones than from the sword. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky.

What can we learn from this?

1. Most people would have been slow to help someone who had deceived them. Joshua
immediately responded to their need.

2. When we live in partnership with God, expect God to do the fighting.

God, please help me to remember to pray about all decisions. Help me to keep my promises. Help me to remember that you will do the fighting.
