Today's Bible Reading...
March 11 - Deuteronomy 29-31
After reviewing the history and laws, Moses' third address (29:1-30:20) is a
call for commitment to God. It is not enough to know God's words, the people
must obey the commands. This is a renewal of the Covenant with God that was made
at Mount Sinai, 40 years earlier (Exodus 19,20).
1. God was keeping God's part of the covenant, the people needed to keep their
part.
2. 29:18 A person who turns away from God is like a root that produces bitter
poison.
(See Hebrews 12:15) When we do what is wrong we plant an evil seed that begins
to
grow out of control like a weed. It will eventually yield a crop of sorrow and
pain. We can prevent the seed of sin from taking root by confessing our sin to God
immediately.
3. The commandments of God are not hidden or beyond our reach. They are not so difficult that people can't follow them. The problem is that people won't to follow them.
4. God's Word is everywhere. 30:14 It's in our mouths and in our hearts. We can know God's will. The problem is not ignorance, it is rebellion.
5. God sets before us life and death, and then gives us the choice. He tells us the consequences of the choice before we make it. Remember - this is a life and
death matter.
6. 30:1-6 Moses told the people that when they were ready to return to God, God would take them back. God is more interested in forgiveness than
punishment. You have not gone too far. You have not done too much. Knowing that he is about to complete his mission here, Moses prepares for his
departure. He commissions Joshua and records the laws in a permanent form. He
teaches a special song to the people.
7. Music is an important part of worship and instruction.
8. God knew that the Israelites would turn away from their commitment, yet God still gave them the promised land.
9. Moses told Joshua to be strong and courageous and God would be with them.
God, help me to make good choices and to keep my commitment to you. Help me to follow the plan you have for my life. In the name of Jesus I pray.
Amen.
