4. “Lord, these ____________ caused the children of Israel, through the counsel

Chapter 30 - Vows are not to be broken
Chapter 31 - Balaam is slain
What do we learn from this lesson?
1. A vow is a sacred religious promise to God. There was a vow of abstinence. A
vow of the Nazarene. A vow of tithes. A vow of giving to the poor. These vows
were given probably as an act to prevent lying or hypocrisy.
2. Each one who professed to be a Christian is under the obligation to body,
soul and mind to God. If God is real to us, we need no vows. If He is not, then
vows are meaningless any way. Being baptized and receiving the Sacrament of Holy
Communion, and being born again will suffice. Through these, the Christian will
always be reminded to renew them when called upon to do so.
3. In the battle, Balaam was slain because he committed a sin against God. As I
John calls it, “the sin against God punishable by temporal death.”
4. We note, in this battle, none of the Israelites soldiers were slain. This was
because the battle was not theirs, it was the Lord’s. So the Israelites made an
atonement to the Lord for saving their lives. Is our prayers a continual gift to
God expressing our appreciation for His free gift of eternal life to us.
Prayer:
Precious Lord, we face any battles in life but always, You have been faithful.
We are grateful to Thee for the times we were in great trouble, of many sources,
and you put Your loving arms around us and gave us a renewal of life. Please
accept our gratitude and praise. Amen.
