Chapter 26 - Israel is numbered for land distribution
Chapter 27 - Joshua is appointed successor to Moses

What do we learn from this lesson?
1. After the plagues, which was 38 years ago, God again ordered the people of Israel, twenty years and older. to be numbered for distribution of the Promised Land to individual tribes according to the membership. For each tribe had decreased from the first census while others had increased.
2. Many were not numbered for land distribution because they would die for rebellion in the wilderness before they got to the Promised Land.
The only ones left to enter the Promised Land would be Joshua and Caleb. The faithful of the twelve spies sent to spy out the land.
3. In this chapter, we find that justice was made when the daughters of Zelophehad came seeking land that would have fallen to their father for he had not rebelled against the Lord as did those of Korah. From that day onward, survivors would receive an inheritance that would have been their father’s inheritance.
4. Moses, himself, had rebelled against God in the wilderness and thus could not enter the Promised Land. Joshua was appointed to lead the children of israel into the new land. We should never forget to learn the lesson of the day. Rebellion against God carries a penalty and in God’s time, the penalty will be executed. “Be sure your sins will find you out.” As with Achan, the only covering for sin that God will recognize is confession and reestablishing oneself to the Will of God.

Prayer,
O God, when we sin against you, please do not execute the penalty so quickly, rather call us back to Thee where we might find forgiveness and once again be free to worship Thee and to become fit company for the host of Heaven. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen
