David and his men had been protecting Nabal's workers and part of
Nabal's
wealth was due to David's care. Nabal refused to extend proper hospitality
to
David and his men. Nabal's wife intervened. The rich man died and David
proposed to his widow. Saul continued to pursue David. David entered
Saul's
camp at night and spared his life. Saul returned home but David knew it was
only a matter of time until he would return. David lived in Philistine
territory
a year and four months.
What can we learn from these verses?
1. David had opportunities to end his problems with Saul but he didn't take
them.
He respected God's anointed and waited for God to intervene. Wait on
God.
Don't take matters into your own hands.
2. Because Nabal was drunk, Abigail waited until morning to approach him
and tell
him what she had done. Timing is important.
3. David refused to kill Saul. He waited for God to remove him from power.
Sometimes leaders are incompetent or unfaithful. Take care not to do
wrong.
Don't take actions that are against God's will.
4. David felt the need to leave the country. Sometimes we need time and
space
to help us solve a problem.
Prayer: God, help me to wait on you to act and not to rush in blindly to
take
care of things myself.
