Today's Bible Reading...

April 29 - I Kings 19, 20

Questions:

1. Why was Jezebel angry with Elijah? (19:1,2)
2. Why was Elijah afraid? (19:2)
3. Where did Elijah go? (19:3)
4. Who touched Elijah? (19:6-8)
5. How long did Elijah go on this food? (19:9)
6. On whom did Elijah throw his cloak and what did it mean? (19:19-21)
7. Whom did Ben-Hadad attack?
8. What happened when a young man refused to strike the prophet when he was asked to do so? (20:35,36)
9. Why did the prophet want to be struck? (20:37-42)
10. What did the prophet say would happen to Ahab. (20:42)

After the victory on Mt. Carmel, Jezebel became angry with Elijah. Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. He fell into depression and wanted to die. And angel appeared to Elijah and strengthened him. God passed by Elijah in the gentle whisper. God told Elijah to anoint Hazael, Jehu and Elisha. Ben-Hadad besieged Samaria. Ahab  defeated him.
Ben-Hadad asked Ahab to spare his life. Ahab did so. A prophet dressed as a wounded man told Ahab that he had set free a man God had determined should die. Therefore, God would take his life.

what can we learn from these verses?

1. Jezebel was angry and Elijah ran for his life. Jezebel was furious because her prophets and gods had been shown as fakes and destroyed. Elijah had stirred up the fury of hell. Expect people to become angry when their gods are revealed as fakes.
2. Elijah fell into depression. Elijah had just had a spiritual victory. He was very tired. Discouragement comes in our weakest moments. God sent his angels to care for Elijah. Do you need a touch from God?
3. God was not in the wind, or the earthquake, or the fire. The Lord came in the gentle
whisper. Shhhhh, quiet. Listen for God's still small voice.

Prayer: God, help me to listen for your voice when I am afraid and when I feel depressed. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.
